Reflexology FAQs

Reflexology is a natural healing therapy originating in Egypt and China around 2000 BC. It is a holistic therapy that works on the principle that the feet mirror the body and the practitioner applies pressure to all parts of the feet thus stimulating the 7,000 nerve endings.

Holistic therapies recognise that a person is not just a physical entity or merely a 'living machine', nor can she be neatly divided into separate social, cultural, physical, mental and emotional aspects which can be studied and manipulated in isolation. On the contrary, it takes as its starting point the need to understand the person within whom the disease is manifesting and that person as a whole. They aim at a positive state of health and wellness, the removal of disease symptoms and a harmonious balance among all these aspects.

There are many entrepreneurs who played their part in bringing Reflexology to the forefront from those early years. Dr. William Fitzgerald, a medical doctor from the US, was the first person to demonstrate the link between the feet and the rest of the body by performing minor surgical operations in the 1800's when he found he could produce an anaesthetic effect to parts of the body by applying tight rubber bands around his patients' fingers. Eunice Ingham wrote many famous books in the 1900's which are still on sale today about stories the feet can tell.

Now in the 21st century, we have hundreds of associations, organisations and schools around the world educating people on the benefits of Reflexology and it is said to be one of the fastest growing complementary therapies in North America .

How can Reflexology help me
In the modern world stress is a factor in the development of most illnesses and diseases, it also lowers immunity, making the body more susceptible to illness. Conventional medical treatment focuses on symptoms and attempts to relieve them, however Reflexology can complement conventional treatment. It can be effective if drugs are not working for you or if you prefer to avoid them because of unpleasant side effects. Because Reflexology is a 'holistic' therapy it treats the whole person via the feet, bringing all the body systems and energy flow into balance and correcting the negative factors involved in the disease process: congestion, inflammation and tension. Reflexology encourages the healing process to begin, the healing power of hands on treatment creates the environment through which self-healing can occur.
