Food for thought

It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.

RAC Reflexology

This was the invitation we received from the Reflexology Association of Canada and it is extended to all of you.
" The 2nd RAC International Conference will take place at the Fairmont Hotel, Winnipeg from November 5th to 7th 2010 and we expect some 400 participants will attend to hear a wide array of presentations, topics and international speakers.  As Canada's only national Reflexology Association, we want to ensure that we help to build and maintain bridges and links between ourselves and other Reflexology associations around the world and, in this spirit of co-operation, we would like to invite you and your members to join us for the conference and for the wonderful international networking opportunities which it will offer."

Footsteps Newsletter - Summer 2010

Hello everyone,,
Well I believe summer is here and having just spent two weeks in the lovely Martimes I am inspired to write to you. Interest in Reflexology and complementary therapies in general is definitely growing in the Maritimes and it is certainly good to be part of it.
Here in Toronto, we seem to have suffered more with the downturn of business so that has to make us sharper and keener when running our own business.
Check out the upcoming courses and dont forget the RAC Conference to be held later in the year.
Looking forward to seeing some of you again at an upcoming course this year and have a great summer.
All the best, Janet

 Tax Stuff
Its a shame we have to talk about tax stuff in the middle of the summer but there are some changes happening on July 1st which will affect several provinces.  Here in Ontario the government is harmonizing the gst and pst taxes to become hst which will affect a lot of services, including massage and reflexology. So here are some facts for you.

CPP starts when your income is over 3,500 dollars at a rate of 9.9%. You would be exempt from this only if you are under 18, or over 70, or if you are currently collecting CPP retirement or disability benefits.

Federal Income tax starts when your income reaches 10,385, at a rate of 15%.

Provincial tax starts at 11,000, at a rate of 5.06%.

There is a $30,000 threshold which applies only to whether or not you are required to collect gst/hst.  Keep in mind that this is based on your profit, not the revenue. You would be taxed on the profit realized after expenses. In addition, neither the federal or provincial governments have tabled their budgets yet for 2010. All the numbers shown above are subject to change.

Make sure you have a good accountant who can help you with your tax and accounting questions.
Eat Cleaner - gain more energy

Let's face it, life is busy. With our limited time it is easy to fall into the trap of grabbing a quick meal on the road, satisfying our hunger but forgoing nutrition.  What if instead we chose cleaner, nutritious foods that would give us more energy to help us cope with our hectic lifestyle?

Eating clean nutritious foods is not a fad diet.  Until fairly recently, all meals were freshly made with fresh ingredients.   It is time to step back and return to a healthy fresh food diet.

Clean eating basics include whole foods in their natural state - unprocessed and unrefined

Follow these tips:

·        Plan ahead - prepare snacks and lunches the evening before

·        Use a variety of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean organic meats and poultry, and foods with healthy fats such as salmon, nuts and seeds and avocado

·        If you have to stop on the road for a snack, choose a restaurant that offers salads, smoothies, baked potatoes, and other non-fried options and skip the sauces and dressings

·        Avoid added sugar, saturated and trans fats, empty calories and drink at least 1 litre of water per day

These small changes in our diets will result in huge gains to overall health and give us more energy.  If we eat properly in the first place, we will not have to diet.
